ASA Asian Student Alliance

History

ASA, Asian Students Alliance, began in the 1994-95 academic year at Stony Brook by a group of Asian American students who wanted to celebrate the cultural and ethnic aspects of their lives as pan-Asian Americans, distinct from the Asian clubs which celebrated only one nationality. This also gave students whose heritage was from smaller Asian countries an Asian-interest club to belong to.

In the Fall of 1995 they created Asian Night, which has gone on to become the largest pan-Asian event on campus with performances by ASA and any number of East and Southeast Asian clubs including CASB (Chinese Association), JSO (Japanese), KSA (Korean), PUSO (Philippine United), VSA (Vietnamese), occasionally some South Asian clubs (Club India/SASA), Greek organizations, and popular off-campus performers.

Just as the Statesman and SB Press have been competitive against each other, ASA and CASB have been the same. While they now work together more closely and co-sponsor each others events, in the early years they tore down each others posters.

In 1996 the Asian American Center Student Advisory Board (AAC SAB), composed of two E-Board members of each Asian interest club when the AAC was located in the Bridge between Harriman Hall and Physics, created the first pan-Asian semiformal, The Nations of Asia. It was held off campus and was meant to be the equivalent of a junior/senior prom. In ???? (what year), ASA took over the running of Nations of Asia because, unlike the other clubs whose annual cultural show was in the Spring, ASA's main event had already taken place. Over time the event became known as the ASA Nations of Asia Semiformal.
