Be Joyous

The
AA E-Zine wishes all a happy and healthy New Year! We will
return at the start of Spring Semester |
|
From Melani
Tiongson, a humorous and poignant reminder for those who
have
gone though it and a glimpse of what is to come for those
just beginning. FRESHMAN
FIRSTS
(or, why you should not be afraid
of midnight screams)
I don’t
know if you can tell by the semi-permanent look of confusion
plastered on my face, the overbearing backpack apparently
tilting my body, or the freshman five (and hopefully nothing
more) sneaking onto my midsection…BUT! In case you can’t,
here is a proclamation:
I am a freshman.
Leaving
my home at the tender age of 18, I came into college with a
look of naivety. Of innocence. Of thinking that Stony Brook
would be similar to sleepaway camp at my local church. Now,
I don’t know what you do at your local church (and by
no means am I going to judge), but I never imagined so many
shenanigans to occur in a mere three and a half months. From
Roosevelt’s blackouts to Kelly dining at midnight to
whatever goes down at West on Thursdays, college proved
to be a stark contrast to my interesting, albeit quiet life
last year.
In high school, a few months consisted of scarcely more than
the same mundane and systematic routine. I got up at 5, went
jogging at 6, and walked to school at 7. I thought nothing
out of the ordinary of this way of life, and proceeded to
live it as such – I proceeded to live life without thinking
about it. But the second I walked that trek up the
Tabler Steps and into my dorm at Douglass, I made a
realization:
I know nothing.
I did
not know that living next to men meant living next to lots
of grunting and loud noises. I did not know that whenever I
exited my room, I was a fair and easy target for bullets
from a Nerf gun. I did not know that people made popcorn at
four in the morning, or that I would have to stand outside
in pajamas and no bra when that popcorn set off a faulty
fire alarm. I did not know a lot of things.
But college is helping me learn.
So, for all you freshman and future freshman and anyone else
who’s yet to assimilate to The College Life™, here is a
work-in-progress' advice to you:
1) Life
costs money. Or in this case, meal points.
2) Do
– and clean – what you do in the bathroom.
3)
Sleep: Ideally, at night.
Realistically, wherever / whenever.
Unfortunately, during class.
4) Go
to events. Especially the “FREE!” ones. With food.
5) Think
before you put something in your mouth. Know what it is, and
where it’s been.
And yes, Mom loves you – as long as you don’t show her your
Facebook.
Good luck everyone in
Spring 2010! |

OUR APOLOGIES
- SITE HACKED |
The aa2sbu.org/aaezine website was
hacked. An obviously
sick and malicious
person removed all
student work and photos created
since 2002. Our hosting company's
backup was defective so we are slowly
recreating the site from other sources. |
