Johnny Madonia
2000 - 2005

Johnny Madonia was diagnosed in August 2005 with Stage III T-Cell non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Initially he responded well to treatment but due to complications, on September 22, 2005, he passed away.

Johnny's parents, John and Paula, are both SBU alumni. John graduated in 1989 and is a well loved Facility Manager at the SB Student Union. The photos below shows him in happier times and many students and alumni will recognize him. Paula Peterson graduated in 1992 and is a social worker at the Riverhead Mental Health Clinic.

Being in a hospital is never fun for children no matter how they are feeling. At the University Hospital, the Child Life Room staff did all they could to bring some laughter into Johnny's time there. The Child Life Program has games, movies, and entertainment for the children and their siblings in the Pediatric, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and the Children's Hematology / Oncology (Cancer) Wards. It also helps children make the adjustment back to school after a hospital stay.

The students in the Media Wing, located in the Student Union, watched John's anguish and heartbreak at the loss of his son. Out of respect for the respect we know he gives to all students, the Student Media came together for a joint fundraising campaign to bring a lasting legacy to Johnny's short life.

We all ask that you please donate generously in memory of Johnny Madonia to the Child Life Program at the University Hospital.
